My rescue horse, Prince He is a 4yo (rising 5 in November) off the track standardbred. He was slaughter bound, bought from the monthly sales by a dogger. He was given a last chance to find a home within a week, along with about four other horses, and would have been killed yesterday had I not rescued him on Friday afternoon. There had been no other interest in him Possibly because he has a club foot. As you can see from the photos he is quite underweight. His last race was only two months ago on the 2nd of July, so I doubt very much that he'd been fed a decent meal since. Probably just left in a paddock and then sent to the sales. I've started off feeding him small meals of prime lucerne chaff every four hours and he also has a bit of grass and barley hay to nibble on. Hopefully he's not at risk of re feeding syndrome anymore. Prince is just the sweetest thing. So incredibly easy to handle in every way so far. Nothing seems to faze him. He walked straight on the float, traveled perfectly, and backed off of it again, when we got home in the dark, nice and slowly. Hard to believe someone could just send him off to the sales knowing his fate was likely to be dog food. He will make a perfect riding horse once he's put on lots of weight - I plan to free lease him to someone with experience in retraining pacers. :)Saw him being ridden at the yards and he cantered but didn't trot. He was perfectly well behaved. Very sensible and very sweet boy! The rugs he's pictured in below fit my other horse, who is about the same height and length, perfectly. They are just hanging off Prince. Lots of weight to put on but in a few months time I will have him looking absolutely fantastic <3
Above photos from Thursday when I visited him at the holding yards.
Below photos are at his temporary 'agistment' at my dad's place.
And this last photo is of Teddy, my first horse, also a standie. Posted this in the cbox last week showing off what a good boy he is He turned 18 last Monday. Fat and happy haha. I don't ride him enough!
